Tail Dock & Dew Claws
Tail Docks are a surgical procedure where part of the tail is removed. This
is an optional procedure. It is performed on certain breeds for cosmetic
reasons and on others for practical reasons. (
hunting dogs for instance
need to be quiet and tail wagging can give them away
). The amount of tail
to be removed varies from breed to breed.
Dew Claws are removed for the dogs safety. Dew Claws are the toe on
the inside of the leg just above the foot. These can cause dogs problems
because they can got caught on carpets and plants causing pain. They
also can be a problem because the nail does not wear down from daily
activity, so it can grow back around into the toe.
(See picture to the right)
Some are attached to bone and some are not.
Both of these procedures should be done when the puppy is 3 to 5 days
old. However, they can be done at any age under sedation. The cost will
vary greatly depending on the age and size of the dog.
